Chet Inman Award 2009

In memory of Chester M. Inman, who helped found the Worcester Chapter, this scholarship is presented annually by the Worcester Chapter of ASM International to a regional student in the field of metallurgy or materials science. The ASM Worcester Chapter held its annual awards night on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in Higgins House at WPI, Worcester. The award this year was awarded to Jodi Lowell, a Graduate Student in Materials Science and Engineering.

Jodi Lowell

Jodi Lowell received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from WPI in May 2008. She is currently working towards her M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering and is this year's Helen E. Stoddard Fellow. Her thesis is investigating the effects of contaminants and the efficiency of cleaning methods to remove the contaminants on vacuum carburized steel. She hopes to pursue a career in DoD-related research after she graduates from WPI.

Lecture Topic: "You, ASM and the Engineering Needs of the Future"

Challenges faced by industry and society will largely be met by technology - and many necessary advances will be driven by new developments in materials science and engineering. Our ability to develop and implement materials and process solutions will directly impact our ability to ensure the security of our citizens, create sources for alternative energy, improve our global environment and improve our quality of life. As a scientific and engineering society that serves our profession, ASM and our Strategic Plan reflect the challenges faced by our membership and our world, particularly in termes of emerging and disruptive technologies. Progress made in the USA, as compared with the rest of the world, will illustrate where we stand in meeting the engineering challenges of the future. While we have a long way to go to meet our own engineering needs in the world economy, our Emerging Professionals have indicated a strong commitment to meet the challenge.
