Research & Publications

Funding is provided by a wide range of government and industry sources. The Materials Science and Engineering is the home of the Metal Processing Institute, which is an industry/university consortium with approximately 180 dues-paying member companies.

Quenching Experiment Videos

One of the areas in which our graduate students and faculty conduct research is quenching - a process where hot metal is cooled rapidly by immersing it in water or other liquids in order to control certain properties of the metal, such as hardness or brittleness.

The two video clips below illustrate the quenching process, as hot metal is immersed in canola oil (clip #1) and ordinary water (clip #2).
