MQP Presentation Day |

WPI had its senior project (MQP) presentation on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. More than 400 students presented their projects on campus, including more than 40 projects presented by about 120 students in Mechanical Engineering Department. Many people from local companies visited WPI on that day. Some of them served as judges for student awards. Six teams from CAM Lab displayed their posters and showed their work to the visitors. Three projects were awarded by external judges.
Kevin Harrington and William Kurzmack received Mechanical Engineering Honorable Mention Award, on their p roject, Two Gait Walking Mobile Robot with Teleoperation over a Wireless Network
Richard Grossman Jr. and Natalie Senenfelder received Manufacturing Engineering MQP Award and Mechanical Engineering Honorable Mention Award, on their project, Lean Manufacturing of the Midframe Process, Sponsored by General Electric Aviation
Michael Demers, Ryan Lehrmitt, and Robert Pantalone received Manufacturing Engineering MQP Award, Mechanical Engineering Honorable Mention Award, and Best Senior Project Award from Society of Manufacturing Engineers Worcester Chapter, on their proj ect, High Efficiency Coolant Nozzle Design for Abrasive Wire Wafer Slicing, Sponsored by Saint-Gobain

Derek Pepicelli got an award !
Industrial Heating magazine, in coorperation with the Metal Treating Institute (MTI), has awarded the eleventh annual Master Craftman Award to a CHTE member company, American Heat Treating. Associated with this award is an education scholarship in Materials Science or Heat Treatment, which is given to Derek Pepicelli, a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student who is doing his work study at our Lab. Derek is working on the establishment of a materials database of Temperature Time Transformation (TTT)graphs for the development of CHT-q/t. Congratulations to Derek.

Prof. Pei’s seminar & SME Award dinner |

Professor Zhijian Pei gave a seminar to Manufacturing Engineering graduate students and professors, on Grinding Technology in Semi-conductor Industry.
SME Worcester Chapter and WPI Students Chapter held an award dinner to award excellent Manufacturing Engineering students at WPI. John Lake, Justin Richard, and Sbrina Wong were the winners. Dr. K. (Subbu) Subramanian from Saint Gobain presented a keynote speech on The World is Flat – Not yet! |

ASME Fellow |

Professor Rong has been elected to the ASME
grade of Fellow on Tuesday, August 24, 2004. The Fellow
is a distinction grade of the professional society, American
Society of Mechanical Engineers. Professor Rong was recognized
by his life long engineering achievements, especially in
the area of academic research. Congratulations.

Higgins Professorship |

Dr. Yiming Rong was awarded the John Woodman
Higgins Professorship in Engineering. This special professorship
was established in 1962 by a bequest from John Woodman Higgins.
It was Mr. Higgins desire that this bequest will provide
for a distinguished professorship to give continuing leadership
to the educational program at WPI. Professor Rong was granted
tenure at the beginning of the 2002-2003 academic year.
The three-year professorship was established in 1962 by
a bequest from John Woodman Higgins, son of Milton Prince
Higgins, first superintendent of the Washburn Shops. The
younger Higgins graduated from WPI with a degree in electrical
engineering in 1896. He developed the Worcester Pressed
Steel Co. into one of the city's leading companies and was
chairman of the firm at the time of his death in 1961. |

MQP Award |

On the Project Day, April 16, 2002, three
MQPs sponsored by GE Aircraft Engines and CAM-Lab. WPI were
presented by the student teams. One project was awarded
the Honorable Mention for Manufacturing and Materials category.
The project is "GE Aircraft Engines Measurement Fixture
Redesign", by Benjamin Lippitt and Robert Paonessa.
