Leo’s New Job June 2008

Dr. Lei (Leo) Zhang will join SFTC at Columbus, OH, in July 2008, as a senior software engineer. Leo joined our CAM Lab. three years ago to be in charge of the continuation of the CHT technology development. He has co-founded a small business, JYL Solutions, as the Chief Technical Officer and successfully acquired the NSF STTR funding for improving the CHT furnace model and CHT technology commercialization. As a result of the project, SFTC may work with CHTE and JYL to make the CHT technology as part of their Deform product. Congratulation to Leo on his new professional career.

Radha’s Defense June 2008

The “oldest” member of our CAM-Lab, Radha Purushothaman, has successfully defended his dissertation on Evaluation and Improvement of Heat Treatment Furnace Model, on Friday, June 6, 2008. Radha joined the CAM Lab in 2001 and graduated with his MS in Manufacturing Engineering in 2003, worked on a fixture design project. After working as a research associate for a year, he returned India for some industrial practice and came back WPI in 2005 to start his study toward a Ph. D in Manufacturing Engineering. Radha has worked with Caterpillar in Illinois for one and half years as a intern student before coming back in January this year to finish up his dissertation. He has worked as both TA and RA with us for years and will start working as a formal employee at Caterpillar in July 2008. Congratulations to Radha.

Puja’s Defense May 2008

On Tuesday, May 27, 2008, Puja Ghatpande has successfully defended her thesis on Simulation based Fixturing Accessibility Analysis, toward her MS in Mechanical Engineering. Congratulations to her.

Hu-jung from KNU March 2008

A new exchange student from Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea, Mr. Hu-jung Nam, arrived at WPI on Monday, March 24, 2008. He will study at our CAM Lab for six months. Welcome to Hu-jung.

Lee’s backing Korea February 2008

The exchange senior student from Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea, Hyoung-jun Lee, has finished his one-year study at WPI and went back KNU on February 26, 2008. He has studied on “computer-aided fixture design for part family” and enjoyed working on the topic. Hyoung-jun made a final presentation on Monday, February 25 and had lunch with Professor Rong and the WPI students who are going to KNU for summer senior projects (MQP) this year. All of the CAM Lab members enjoyed having Hyoung-jun stay with us and welcome him to visit back in the future. Best wishes to him on his finishing his BS study at KNU.

Professor Xu’s arrival February 2008

Professor Qingyan Xu from Tsinghua University arrived at WPI on February 11, 2008. He will work with WPI’s Metal Processing Institute as a research scientist for a year, jointly sponsored by Tsinghua University/Chinese Government and MPI. Professor Xu is a friend of our CAM Lab and has visited WPI twice before. Welcome.

New members coming to join us June-Sep. 2007
Several new members joined our CAM-Lab at WPI during this summer, including,
  • Dr. Gang Wang from Tsinhua University, Beijing, China, where he received his Ph.D degree in Mechanical Engineering (Materials Processing) in 2005 and worked as a Post-Doc research associate. He works as a research scientist in the area of Modeling and Simulation of Heat Treatment Processes, starting on June 16, 2007. Dr. Wang is mainly supported by CHTE at WPI.
  • Mr. Bowang (Bose) Xiao from Oakland University, Rochester, MI, where he received his MS degree in Mechanical Engineering in May 2007. Bose is a Ph. D student, also working on Heat Treatment Process Modeling and Simulation, starting on August 15, 2007. He is a research assistant supported by GM Powertrain, Pontiac, MI.
  • Ms. Hua Bai from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, where she received a BS degree in Industrial Engineering in July 2007. She will study for her MS degree in Manufacturing Engineering, particularly in the area of Reverse Supply Chain Modeling and Analysis, starting on August 21. Hua participated in the MQP in China program last year and studies under WPI Fellowship.
  • Dr. Hui Wang from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, where he received his Ph. D in Mechanical Engineering, particularly in the area of Green Manufacturing, in July 2007. Hui will work as a research associate in the area of Computer-integrated Engineering, starting on August 30. He is partially supported through a research project with Caterpillar, Peoria, IL.
  • Dr. Xubing Chen from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, where he received his Ph. D in Mechanical Engineering in 2000 and worked as a Post-Doc research associate. Dr. Chen will work on the Knowledge Data Discovery Technology Application in Heat Treatment Process Simulation, starting on September 6, 2007. He is supported through an NSF STTR project with JYL Solutions.
  • Mr. Jun Zhou from Shandong University, Jinan, China. He is an exchange Ph. D student, working with us for one year, starting on September 5, 2007. Jun will work in the area of Micro-machining Process Modeling and Simulation.
  • Mr. Feng Jiang from Shandong University, Jinan, China, also an exchange Ph. D student, working with us for one year starting on September 19, 2007. He is working in the area of Machining-Grinding Processes.
Ted left April 2007

Ted has found a job and is now working at Mascon Inc., Woburn, MA. Congratulations to him.

CAMLab new member January 2007
Wei ( Wayne) Tian joined our CAM Lab from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), as a research assistant in MS program of Manufacturing Engineering. He was an exchange student and did his senior project at WPI in D term last year. Welcome Wayne’s coming back as a new member of CAM-Lab.
Radha's internship June 2006
Radha will join Caterpillar as an intern student for one year starting from June 2006. This is a good opportunity for him to gain some real working experience in US. He has visited this company twice before and gave presentations introducing our research development of CHT-bf and CHT-cf. Congratulations to Radha.
Yao's Leaving! May, 2006

 

Yao Zhou has been admitted to Columbia University at New York City for his Ph. D study in Mechanical Engineering. He was offerred a full Teaching Assistantship to support his study over there. Yao has been with us since January 2004 and worked on our DOE project on simulation and optimization of heat treatment processes of Aluminum castings, as well as his personal interest in optimization. He has brought a lot of fun and joy to us. Congratulations to him.

Professor Jianfeng Li, Dean of Mechanical Engineering School at Shandong Univesrity, Jinan, China, and his Ph. D student Dong Lu joined us at CAM-Lab on April 5, 2006. Professor Li will stay with us for 4-5 months while Ms Lu will study at WPI for a year,as part of her Ph D study plan. Ms. Lu is working on Clamping Optimization as part of her dissertation in the area of Computer-aided Fixture Design. With their visit, it is a good opportunity to exchange information on technical and educational experience, and establish potential research collaboration. Welcome Professor Li and Ms. Lu.

Dr. Hua Li from Shanghai Marine University joined us at CAM-Lab. as a Research Associate on March 30, 2006. He graduated with Ph. D in ME from Dalian University of Science and technology, Dalian, China several years ago. He did computer graphics and CAD package development work for his dissertation. He will work in the area of Computer-aided Fixture Design.

Exchange Students fron HUST!
March 3 - May 15, 2006

Four from six (two did not get visa) senior ME students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) have come to WPI for their senior projects. Yuxuan (Popeye) Liu and Jiaxing (Jim) Liu are working on a project of developing a special dynamometer for precision grinding processes, sponsored by Saint Gobain Worcester, and Wei (Wayne) Tian and Bomiao Li are working on a shop layout design project based on the lean manufacturing principle, sponsored by New Age Technologiesy, Attleboro, MA.Ice Chung is helping the latter one too. The HUST students are also sitting in ES 3323 class to learn Advanced CAD technology, under WPI education system.

Dr. Jinwu Kang came back from Tsinghua University and worked with our research team on the CHT-q/t project. He, Dr. Zhang and Radha visited Surface Combustion and Timken companies in Ohio. Dr. Kang gave a report presentation on Friday, August 5.

Professor Zhao from Shanghai! Sunday, March 13, 2005
Professor Cuilian Zhao from Shanghai University joined us on Sunday, March 13, 2005. She will work at CAM-Lab for about three months. Professor Zhao's research area is in CAD/CAM applications. She has led a research group and conducted several projects for different companies in China. Currently she is working towards her Ph.D degree. Hopefully her research experience will benefit us, particularly in the area of CAD/CAM application program development, and also her working experience with us is helpful in the development of her professor career.

Dr. Jinwu Kang returned China on Saturday, March 12, 2005. He has worked with us for one and half months, lead the team working on our CHTE project, and made a good progress. He will continue the work while working at Tsinghua University.

Yihong (David) Yang is leaving us for a Rsearch Engineer position at Caterpillar Research Center, Peoria, IL. He will join the research team there for the research and development on production planning with UGS Team Center. David will continue his dissertation at WPI and hopefully finish it soon.

Dr. Jinwu Kang
Dr. Jinwu Kang came back WPI from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China to WPI again, on Tuesday, January 25, 2005. This time he will work with us for about one and half months. His wife was with his for the first time to visit USA. Dr. Kang has been promoted to Associate Professor at Tsinghua University recently. Congratulations to him.

Radhakrishnan Purushothaman
Radhakrishnan Purushothaman is coming back after working for almost a year at India. From January 2005, he will be a Ph.D student in Manufacturing Engineering Program and an active member of our CAM-Lab. Radha graduated from WPI with an M.S in Manufacturing Engineering two years ago and worked at our CAM-Lab. for another year as a research associate. He came to Worcester earlier on December 21 and settled down quickly. He met many old friends. Everyone loves him and welcomes his back.

Jayesh Deshpande and Benick Cumani joined our CAM-Lab this year. Jayesh is in his first semester of MS study at WPI and he is from India. Nick is a part time MS student in Manufacturing Engineering Program. He is working with Intel Company in a Massachusetts facility. This is his last year of study.

Hui Song

Dr. Hui Song joined our CAM-Lab. in June 2003. Dr. Song got his B.S in Mechanical Engineering in 1995 and M.S. in Materials Science in 1998, both from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. His Ph. D in Mechanical Engineering was awarded by the University of Alabama in 2003. His research has focused on Manufacturing Process Modeling and Simulation.

Rohit Vaidya
Rohit Vaidya has got an offer of internship for one year from American Heat Treating Company at Monroe, CT. The company intends to hire him when he graduates. He will start the work on February 1, 2003. Rohit has involved in the development of Computer-aided Heat Treatment Planning System (CAHTPS), a project funded by Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) at WPI where American Heat Treating is one of the pilot testing companies for the project application. Rohit has finished all of the course work and most of the thesis. He expects to graduate in Fall 2003.

Professor Fuling Zhao from Dalian University of Technology (DUT) has joined us as a visiting scholar for half year from December 6, 2001 to May 5, 2002. Professor Zhao received his advanced degrees in Mechanical Engineering from DUT. Currently He is Associate Dean at School of Mechanical Engineering at DUT.
