Professor Jie Sun from Shandong University visited our CAM-Lab in December 17-20. He gave a seminar to CAM-Lab members. The topic is on Machining Process Modeling. Professor Sun is in Dong Lu’s Ph. D advisory committee at Shandong University and currently is a visiting scholar at University of Alabama. Dong Lu is a visiting scholar at our CAM Lab for a year.

| Saint Gobain MQP Presentation |

There are four Sain Gobain MQPs this year at the ME Saint Gobain Project Center where one is advised by Professor Chris Brown. Three Saint Gobain MQP teams presented their progress in A and B terms on December 13, 2006. One project was delayed and will be restarted in C term. An additional MQP sponsored by Middleton Aerospace and advised by Professor Rong was presented too. Several project metors from Saint Gobain participated the presentations.

Professor Rong and his wife made a trip to Singapore and Hong Kong from December 2-10, 2006. Professor Rong was invited by National University of Singapore (NUS) as a visiting professor for a week where he participated the 7 th Asia Pacific Conference on Materials Processing (APCMP), December 4-6, 2006, presented a paper, and gave a seminar at NUS. In Hong Kong, Professor Rong was invited as a Ph. D advisory committee member at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and participated the dissertation defense on December 8, 2006.

The traditional CAM-Lab Thanksgiving party was held at Professro Rong’s house on November 23, 2006. Besides the current members of CAM-Lab, Yao Zhou came back from Columbia University, Weiwei Wang joined us too since she was in the area for business. Several special guests joined the celebration and made this year unique. Professor Wuqiang Yang from UMIST, UK, was Professor Rong’s schoolmate in Tsinghua University and got together after more than 20 years. Professor Xin Zhang from Northern Jiaotong University, Beijing, China is Professor Rong’s odl friend and currently working as a visiting scholar with MIT for half a year. Dr. Yongchi Tian came with his wife from Princeton NJ. He was Professor Rong’s “oldest” friend, classmate at primary school. Professor Terai is a visiting scholar at MIT from Japan. Dr. Eraldo da Silva is a visiting scholar from Brazil and currently working at Saint Gobain . Roger Fu came this year too. He is a second year student at Harvard University and his father was Professor Rong’s classmate at Tsinghua University. All enjoyed the turkey and other food, shared the stories about Thanksgiving, and activities such as pin-bang and singing.

| MQP in China get together |

MQP in China program had its second get together in the year, on November 20, 2006. More details were introduced and discussed on the projects for summer 2007. Seventeen students formally signed up for the program, many more than the number initially expected, which was ten. Formal interview process will be conducted soon later.

Formal member of CAM-Lab, Doctor Candidate at UC Berkeley, Mr. Zhiyong (Anzy) An visited back WPI and CAM-Lab., together with another formal member, Dr. Yuezhuang (Eric) Kang who is working locally. Anzy may o back China to take a professor position in Economics, which is his major for Ph. D currently.

Professor Rong made another trip to Asia in November 1-14. He had a meeting with Dr. Kang and Professor Zhu at Tsinghua University on November 2 and visited Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) on November 3. Then Professor Rong visited FixtureWorks in Hangzhou during the weekend and Saint Gobain Shanghai on Monday, November 6, before heading to Japan.
Professor Rong visited the largest manufacturing show in Japan, Japan Machine Tool Show on November 8 in Tokyo and met with Professor Matsumura from Tokyo Denki University at the show. Professor Rong also visited Yokahoma University on November 9 and Kyoto University on November 13, while participated the International Conference Production and Machining Technology, November 9-12 at Matsue, Japan. He also gave a seminar to SME Osaka Chapter on Modeling and Simulation of Heat Treatment Processes on Monday, November 13, before heading back to US on Tuesday.

Professor Rong visited Amphnol TCS, the leader electronic connector producer, at Nashua, NH, on October 27. He toured the company with new development and manufacturing divisions, and introduced the MQP in China program. Amphenol intended to sponsor projects for both Chinese exchange students doing project at WPI and WPI students doing MQP in China at their operations in Changzou, China. The CEO of the company, Richard Schneider is WPI alumni and ME Advisory Board Member.

They share the experience and expectation of the China program. A lot of pictures of China, project and non-project related, were shown in the meeting. He gave a seminar to Manufacturing Engineering graduate students and professors as well as local industrial professionals. Professor Matsumura introduced his new research progress on Micro Fabrication for Functional Surfaces.

Professor Rong made another trip to China in September 11-30, 2006.
In Beijing, Professor Rong met with Professor Zhu and his family in the evening of September 12, and had meetings with Professor Kang and Professor Xu at Mechanical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University on September 13, as well as Dr. Jianbin Luo and his associates at Management Training Center at Tsinghua University
In Wuhan, on September 14 and 15, Professor Rong introduced Al Barry, CEO of CIS, to his HUST colleagues and discussed the MQP in China program this year and in the future. He also had meetings with groups of professors and students.
On September 16-18, Professor Rong visited Xiamen University and Huaqiao University. He learned and discussed the research work on grinding technology with Professor Xipeng Xu, and Vice president of Huaqiao University, and his associates. Professor Rong also visited his long time friend, Dr. Williams Guo, at his hometown, Longtan, and one of his company at Xiamen.
On September 19 and 20, Professor Rong visited FixtureWorks company in Hangzhou and CIS in Wuxi.
Professor Rong participated the 12th International Manufacturing Conference (IMCC) in Xi'an, on September 21-23 and two other conferences (International Conference on Surface Technology and Surface Engineering and the 9th International Symposium on Advanced Conference on Surface Finishing Technology and Surface Engineering in Dalian, September 24-28.
On September 29, Professor Rong visited Shandong University at Jinan. He gave a seminar on Computer-aided Production Planning and Fixture Design, met with the university president, Professor Tao Zhan, and had a meeting with Professor Xing Ai and his associates with discussion on machining technology development.

His research area is in Machining and Grinding Processes. Zhiyang (Kendra) Rong joined CAM-Lab as an MS student. She was from Beijing University of Astronautics and Aeronautics (BUAA) with BS degree.

| MQP in China |
June 14 – August 25, 2006 |
Eight senior students and one MS students from WPI went to China for their Major Qualifying Projects (MQP). They worked with fifteen senior students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in mixed teams on five projects sponsored by Saint Gobain Shanghai Operations, CIS Wuxi Operations, and HUST. The WPI-HUST Senior Project Center of Mechanical Engineering was officially established in the end of July. Professor Durgin and Professor Hou from WPI also visited HUST and participated the student presentations. After the projects, some of the students stayed longer for visiting other places in China. For example, Jake and Rich went to Luoyang ( Song Mountain to see Shaolin Temple), Xi’an, and Beijing. Mark, Todd, and Brian went to Tai Mountain and Beijing. Their project partners helped them a lot. All of them enjoyed the experience in China. For more details, please see the MQP in China web-site.
During this time, Professor Rong participated the 7th International Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing held in Guangzhou, China, June 19-22; and International Symposium on Flexible Automation held in Osaka, Japan, July 10-12. He presented two papers in the conferences on “Development of Computer-aided Manufacturing Planning Systems for Rotational Parts in Mass Customization” and “ Internet-based Robot Operation Monitoring and Control”. Professor Rong also visited Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Dalian University of Science, and Technology, and HUST.

The Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) at WPI held its semi-annual meeting in May 23-24, 2006 to review the progress of sponsored projects and plan for next year research activities. Professor Rong, Dr. Zhang, Radha, and Amarjit attended the meeting and reported their research progress of the development of CHT-q/t software tool, as well as the applications of CHT-bf and CHT-cf. They discussed with the focus group and met many friends from difference companies.

Professor Rong, Professor Li, and Ted made a trip to MI and OH. Professor Rong visited GM Powertrain, Chrysler Tech Center, and Ford Tech Center for R&D update in US automotive industry and technical discussion. Professor Rong also visited Kettering university where Ted was doing research project. They had a meeting with Professor Lucy King, the collabolator of the project at Kettering, for technical discussion. Professor Rong and Professor Li met with President Tao Zhan of Sandong University, China, and Vice President Jingsong Wang of Tsinghua University, China, who were attending a University President Forum at University of Michigan, where Professor Li was visiting for two days. Professor Li and Ted also visited an Industrial Advisory Board Meeting of NSF I/UCRC for Intelligent Maintenance Systems at GM Tech Center. Finally all of them visited Ohio State University on the way back. They met Professor Taylan Altan and his visiting scholar from Shandong University, Zhongqiu Wang, at the Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing. The trip was very productive. |

Also the exchange students (Wayne Tian, Popey Liu, Jim Liu, and April Li) from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) will leave WPI soon, plus welcoming the three new comers (Professor Jianfeng Li, Hua Li, and Dong Lu) recently joined CAM-Lab. Yao Zhou has been admitted to Columbia University at New York City for his Ph. D study in Mechanical Engineering. He was offerred a full Teaching Assistantship to support his study over there. Yao has been with us since January 2004 and worked on our DOE project on simulation and optimization of heat treatment processes of Aluminum castings, as well as his personal interest in optimization. He has brought a lot of fun and joy to us. Congratulations to him. |

In 2005 summer, four WPI ME students went to HUST, China, teamed up with HUST students, to do their MQPs on special robot design.
D Term 2006, four HUST exchange ME senior students came to WPI for their senior projects, where one project was sponsored by Saint Gobain
In 2006 summer, nine WPI ME seniors will go to China, teaming up with twelve HUST students, to conducting five realworld projects, where one of the projects is sponsored by Saint Gobain Shanghai Operation.
5. Introduction and discussion on Saint Gobain MQP for 2006-2007 year. Four projects have been proposed and fourteen students have been shown interests in doing the projects.

The proposal for a joint graduate degree program (Ph.D and MS) in Manufacturing Engineering between WPI and HUST (Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China) has been approved by WPI faculty in the faculty meeting on Thursday, April 20, 2006. MQP in China is formally launched on March 21, 2006. Nine WPI ME students signed up for five projects. They will travel to China from June 14 to August 6, working on the projects sponsored by local companies and institutions, with HUST students in mixed team. Potential NSF grant may support them for most expenses beyond the tuition. They will continue the good experience the four WPI students had last summer, and expect more exciting time ahead, with better preparation. Yuxuan (Popeye) Liu and Jiaxing (Jim) Liu are working on a project of developing a special dynamometer for precision grinding processes, sponsored by Saint Gobain Worcester, and Wei (Wayne) Tian and Bomiao Li are working on a shop layout design project based on the lean manufacturing principle, sponsored by New Age Technologiesy, Attleboro, MA.Ice Chung is helping the latter one too. Derek Pepicelli got an award !
Industrial Heating magazine, in coorperation with the Metal Treating Institute (MTI), has awarded the eleventh annual Master Craftman Award to a CHTE member company, American Heat Treating. Associated with this award is an education scholarship in Materials Science or Heat Treatment, which is given to Derek Pepicelli, a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student who is doing his work study at our Lab. Derek is working on the establishment of a materials database of Temperature Time Transformation (TTT)graphs for the development of CHT-q/t. Congratulations to Derek.

| Dr. Rong's Hong Kong visit |

Dr. Rong spent eight weeks in Hong Kong for IQP (junior projects) advising. He and Professor Karen Lemone from CS advised 24 students for six projects, sponsored by Hong Kong Civic Exchange and Caritas Adult and Higher Education Service. During his staying in Hong Kong, Dr. Rong participated the International Cconference on Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM), and presented a paper on Technology Hub for Supplier-based Manufacturing. He also visited many major universities in Hong Kong, including, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as University of Macau.
During this period of time, Dr. Rong made two trips to the main land of China, basically for the preparation of MQP in China in summer 2006. He visited Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan, as well as Tongjin Hospital in HUST, Saint Gobain Shanghai Operations in Shanghai, American Industrial Partners China operation at Wuxi, as well as Shanghai Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University. Five real world projects have been identified for both WPI and HUST students to perform in summer 2006. Dr. Rong also visited several companies in Shenzhen and Huizhou, and met many former class mate, students, and friends. Many of them have not met each other for twenty years.
Dr. Rong's brother and his family joined him during the Chinese New yesr time for three days. This was the first time for Dr. Rong to celebrate this event in China in last twenty years.

Prof. Rong’s IQP visit to Hong Kong |

Professor Rong will be in Hong Kong advising WPI junior projects (IQPs ).
Twenty four WPI junior students will work on six projects about Hong Kong Harbor development and environment problems and secondary education problems as well as distance learning problems. The projects sponsors include non-government organizations such as Civic Exchange and Caritas as well as Hong Kong Universities. Professor Karen Lemone and Professor Rong will be co-advising the students.
