Undergraduate Programs
The WPI Mechanical Engineering Department prepares students to deal with world situations that involve technological and humanistic/societal issues. Students acquire literacy and competency by utilizing scientific and engineering methods for devising useful products in an economical way, while considering the impact on society.
Mechanical engineering students may discover how to build a more fuel efficient airplane, design a lighter wheelchair, test flow in constricted blood vessels, or determine the optimal design of mechanical elements. With efficiency a central theme, our students study design, construction and execution to make the world a better place.
Projects and research are critical components of a mechanical engineering education at WPI. You'll complete an Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) and a Major Qualifying Project (MQP) before graduation. Both can be conducted here in the US or at one of our worldwide Project Centers, coordinated through your advisor and the Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division (IGSD).
