The Rehabilitation Engineering Program at WPI provides engineering students with the opportunity to design prototypes of mechanical and electro-mechanical devises to assist individuals with disabilities. Teams of 2-4 senior engineering students work with individual clients, rehabilitation engineers, and physical and occupational therapists to design and fabricate a device that is then donated to their client. Small design projects may also be completed by students in courses such as the Introduction to Engineering Design or Rehabilitation Engineering courses that prepares students for their senior projects. Graduate students research related to assistive technology is also conducted in the laboratory.

The ATRC also has a working staff that tackles smaller projects. Though the projects are smaller and usually take less time to accomplish, they provide great benefits to the recipient. A 1000 sq. ft. Rehabilitation Lab is located adjacent to the Biomechanics Labs in the Higgins Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering. The lab includes workspace for the fabrication of prototype devices, A/D data acquisition systems and PC computers for design, documentation and access to network resources.
