Professor Rong and Xuekun (Chris) Li attended the ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division annual conference at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, on October 5-6. Chris presented a paper of Kinematics Analysis of Grinding Processes with a Virtual Grinding Wheel Model and Single Grain Grinding Simulation. They also visited the Mechanical Engineering School and their Manufacturing Research Labs.

Professor Rong attended International Symposium on Advanced Abrasive Technology (ISAAT) in Gold Coast, Australia in September 27-October 2, 2009. MQP in China (China Trip) 2009

Even under challenging economic condition, twenty one (14 last year) senior students from WPI went to China for their Major Qualifying Projects (MQP) or Interactive Qualifying Projects (IQP) this year. These students were majoring ME/MFE, MGE/IE, RBE, ECE, and MA at WPI. They worked with twenty senior students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), nine from Southeast University (SEU), and four from Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) in mixed teams on eight projects sponsored by Caterpillar China, CIS Wuxi Operations, Saint Gobain Abrasives Shanghai Operations, Aucksun Metal, BYC and YPC, SCC, HUST, and BJTU. Two projects were further divided into two subprojects. The projects were,
1) Lean Manufacturing – Undercarriage Inspection at AsiaTrak
2) Green production LED application at CIS
3)Fixture System for High Force Grinder, Saint Gobain Mechanical System and Control system
4)Wuhan 2009 Robotic Soccer, Wuhan Team Group #1 and Group #2
5)Developing an Electro Galvanized Steel Price Index System for Jiangsu Aucksun Metal
6)A Comparative Study of the Purchasing Management Strategies at BYC and YPC
7)Contract Management for International EPC Projects at SCC
8)Comparative Study on Engineering Education in China & USA, IQP Team.
The final presentation of the projects was held on September 31, 2009 at HUST. All teams from Southeast University in Nanjing and Beijing Jiaotong University came to Wuhan for the final presentation. All teams introduced their projects in a very professional way. The final presentation was hosted by Professor Liang Gao and Kevin Rong, the Co-Directors of HUST-WPI Senior Project Center in Mechanical Engineering. The 90+ (70+ last year) participants include

Professor Rong and Professor Amy Zeng from Management were the major project advisors from WPI. Professor Wenjin Lou and Professor Jon Abraham were the co-advisors for the ECE and MA students.
During this time, Professor Rong visited Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Southeast University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University, Dalian University of Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai University, Donghua University, South China University of Science and Technology, Hunan University, Shandong University, Harbin University of Science and Technology, Suzhou Industrial Park Institute of Vocational Technology, and Wuxi Institute of Technology. At several universities, he gave presentations on the topics of his research, as well as Engineering Education at WPI. They met with several former CAM Lab. members, i.e., Professor Zhenjia Li at Harbin University of Science and Technology, Dr. Jinwu Kang at Tsinghua University, Dr. Caihua Xiong at HUST, Shulin Li and Jianping Yu at Zhuzhou, Hunan, Dr. Dong Lu from Nanchang, Feng Jiang and Jun Zhou at Shandong University, Dr. Xubin Chen at Wuhan, and Xi Xu at Shenzhen.
Next year, the program will be further expanded to run in two groups of students in E and A terms. The students will be from different majors (ME/MFE/IE/RBE/ECE/CEE) and working with the students from different universities of China (and Korea possibly) and on different projects of MQP and IQP. All projects will sponsored by global companies and institutes.
During the summer, Professor Rong also attended 19th International Conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Middlesbrough, UK, 6th – 8th July, 2009. He presented a paper on grinding process study, authored by Xuekun and himself.

Professor Rong had a get together with former CAM Lab members and there in the bay area. They are Dr. Yuyun (John) Zhang, Dr. Li Zhou, and Zhinyang (Kendra) Rong.

China Trip

Professor Rong visited China in February 2-13, 2009 to prepare the MQP in China program in summer. During the short time, he visited the companies of Caterpillar Suzhou office, Saint Gobain Shanghai Center, Pratt & Whitney Shanghai Office and UTC Beijing Training Center, CIS Wuxi, REM Wuxi, Seco Tianjin, and Sany Beijing, as well as contacted Amphenol TCS Changzhou. The projects with sponsors for this year have been finalized in spite of the slow economic condition. Several companies have shown strong intention to sponsor projects next year and several companies could not sponsor projects this year, primary due to the economic down turn. Professor Rong met with the students in groups who participated the MQP in China program last year, who had applied the program for this year, and the students who are coming to WPI as exchange students in D term this year. They had a lot of introduction, discussions and comments about the program.
Professor Rong also visited Huazhong University of Science and Technology Wuhan, Southeast University Nanjing, Shanghai University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University Beijing, and Beijing Jiaotong University. He made presentations at these schools before, introducing WPI and the MQP program and had more depth discussion with them this time on Engineering Education reform in US and in China. Professor Rong learned the following. One article based on his previous presentations was published in a Chinese journal of Engineering Education, to introduce the WPI education system. One paper by Professor Diran Apelian and Gretar Tryggvason at WPI was translated and published in a separate magazine. A book published by Professor Cha and his colleague at Beijing Jiaotong University, who visited us last year, included a case of WPI on the best practice of Engineering Education, together with Waterloo Canada, MIT, and T7 Group University System in Belgium.
Dr. Hui Wang joined Professor Rong in several activities in China during his vacation time. He came back WPI on the same day as Professor Rong.

On August 23, Saturday, Professor Rong visited Washington, DC, to see his long time friends, Professor Xun Xun from University of Auckland, New Zealand and Dr. Ian Wang from NRC Canada, who are participating an IEEE conference there. He also met Dr. Anzy An at Fannie Mae. Anzy was a CAM-Lab member and is going back China as an associate professor of economics at Central Finance University, Beijing, China.
Professor Rong had a meeting with the MQP team at GE Cincinnati on Monday, August 25. Three WPI students did their summer interns at GE Aviation Service Sector and now to start their senior project (MQP) in A term. They had dinner together in the evening of Sunday.
On the way to Cincinnati, OH, on Sunday, August 24, Professor Rong also met with Dr. Lei Zhang, who just left our CAM Lab. Last month and now is working with Scientific Forming Technology Company at Columbus, OH, and Yong Bai, who was also our CAM Lab alumni and working in Cincinnati area. |

He did residual stress measurement to the test castings after air-quenching at OU and visited the quenching facility of GM engine blocks for acquiring production condition information which will be used in the future tests and simulation.

Hua Li and Hui Wang spent a week at Caterpillar, Peoria, IL from March 2 to 8,
2008, working on a demonstration and on site testing of their new development of
Computer-aided Modular Fixture Design System for Welding. Their work was highly
recognized for the functions and practical application effectiveness. The
research and development work will be continued toward more intelligent and

Professor Rong started another trip to Asia on Wednesday, November 28, 2007. First, he visited National Tsinghus University and National Chiao Tung University at Hsinchu, Taiwan on Friday, November 30. He met with many old friends. Then he visited National Taiwan University at Taipei on Saturday, December 1. Professor Rong traveled down south to Tainan on Sunday, December 2, to participate the International Forum on Systems and Mechatronics, where he gave an invited speech and presented a technical paper on Tuesday, December 4. He also visited National Cheng Kung University and the Sorth Hi-Tech Business Development Zone on Monday, December 3. Professor Rong continued his trip to Shanghai, China on Wednesday, December 5, from Taipei through Hong Kong.
Professo Rong met with Dr. Tony Wu, Director of Business Development of Bodycote Asia, and Ed Jamieson, Director of Technology & Quality at Bodycote, as well as Professor Liang Gao from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), in Shanghai Pudong Airport on Wednesday, December 5. They talked about WPI’s MQP in China program. On Thursday, December 6, Professor Gao and Professor Rong visited Amphenol TCS Changzhou Operations in the morning, meeting with Mr. Sky Wang and his colleagues, and Nypro Suzhou Operations in the afternoon, meeting with the Pan China Supply Chain Manager, Mr. Ron Alciati. Besides tours to the facilities, the MQP in China 2008 was discussed in detail. On Friday, together with Professor Tryggvason from WPI, Professor Rong visited Caterpillar Shanghai Office (meeting with the Materials Technology Manager at China R&D Center and Technology & Solutions Division, Mr. Gary Yerby) and the new Technical Center of Saint Gobain at Shanghai (meeting with the General Manager, Dr. Dieter Linnhoefer and Technical Shared Service, Mr. Alex Wang). They left Shanghai for Wuhan via over-night train in the evening of Saturday, December 7.
On Sunday, December 9, Professor Gao and Professor Rong met with the HUST students who are going to WPI for their senior projects in March-May (D Term) 2008 and the students who may participate the MQP in China 2008 program in summer 2008. Professor Rong also met old and new friends there, as well as several HUST students who participated the MQP in China before, and talked a lot on both education and research collaboration. On Monday, Professor Tryggvason gave a seminar to HUST professors and graduate students, on Engineering Education in USA, followed by a discussion meeting with HUST faculty and administrative members of Mechanical Engineering School. The issues and future of the MQP in China program was discussed in addition to the general topic of engineering education. In the afternoon, Professor Tryggvason had a campus and Lab tour of HUST, after the lunch with the HUST President, Professor Peigen Li and several university officers. Professor Rong had a meeting with WPI-HUST Senior Project Center colleagues to discuss the details of MQP in China 2008. In the evening, Professor Tryggvason and Professor Rong flied back Shanghai in the evening of Monday, December 10.
On Tuesday, December 11, Professor Rong visited CIS (meeting with the General Manager, Mr. Lim Tek Hong and his colleagues) and REM (meeting with the President Al Barry and General Manager Chay Chin Tat) companies who are sponsoring MQP in China program in 2008, as well as a potential sponsor, Bodycote (meeting with General Manager China Li Shen), all in Wuxi, China. Professor Tryggvason and Professor Rong came back US from Shanghai in the morning of Wednesday, December 12. |

A tour was given to the visitors and the project idea was discussed. They studied a mass production line from collecting data, analyzing the production flow, identifying problems, and giving suggestions of improvements. Professor Rong visited the Mexicali plant on April 23 and discussed the progress with the team. |

Professor Rong arrived at Shanghai on March 21, 2007. First, he and Professor Liang Gao, Co-director of WPI-HUST Senior Project Center in ME, first visited Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Nanjing,together with Dr. Steve Liu from Saint Gobain. Then they visited Amphenol TCS Changzhou Operations, CIS Wuxi Operations, Key Stone Wuxi, and Saint Gobain Shnaghai Operations to prepare MQP in China 2007. They also visited FixtureWorks in Hangzhou before coming to HUST at Wuhan on Saturday, March 24, 2007.
At HUST, Professor Rong met with President Peigan Li, ME Dean Professor Xinyu Shao, and other colligues to discuss the operation of the MQP in China Program, the impact to engineering education, and logistical arrangement. Professor Rong had a meeting with twenty two HUST students who are doing senior projects with WPI students in summer 2007. Eight of twelve HUST students who participated the MQP in China program last year came to the meeting and shared their experience with the new students. Professor Rong also visited the new Engineering Practice Annex where the MQP in China program will be hosted from this year. He got much impressed by the new building, machine tools, and student activities he saw during the visit. He met many old friends who supported the program in last two years. Professor Caihua Xiong and Professor Ligang Cai introduced the progress of the on-going National High-Tech (863 and 973) projects on Digital Manufacturing and manufacturing planning, which Professor Rong participated as international collaborating co-PI.
On March 28, Professor Rong visited Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he was hosted by Professors Baicheng Liu, Shoumei Xiong, Qingyan Xu, and Jinwu Kang, all in Mechanical Engineering Department. He left Shanghai to go back USA on March 29, 2007. |

Professor Rong and the HUST exchange students as well as William Tang, their project partner at WPI, and Wayne, graduate student and their peer advisor at WPI, went to Nashua, NH to visit Amphenol TCS to understand the company and their project. Another project partner, Andy Anderson could not make the trip because he was on the way back from his IQP at London, UK. The project is on the application of Lean Manufacturing principle to Amphenol’s operations, mainly in Maxicali, Mexico. The team will be visiting there in April. The project will be continued in summer for applications in Amphenol’s Changzhou Operations in China, by another HUST team with William and and Andy. |

D dissertation research topics, and future collaboration with CAT. CAT gave an A++ comments to Rahda’s work at CAT. We were proud of his representation of WPI’s quality of practical research. Professor Rong also met with David Yang’s team for a potential project on Computer-aided Modular Welding Fixture Design. |
