Welcome to Computer Aided Manufacturing Lab (CAM-Lab.) at WPI

Computer-aided Manufacturing Laboratory (CAM Lab) is the host of many research projects in design and manufacturing for undergraduate and graduate students. Our fixturing research has been recognized nationally and internationally. The research in manufacturing systems and manufacturing processes is still expanding. Our academic research is combined with industrial application with both federal and industrial funding. We have an integrated research team with research associates, graduate and undergraduate students.

Prof. Matsumura’s seminar

December 15, 2005, Thursday

Professor Takashi Matsumura from Tokyo Denki University visited WPI and CAM-Lab. He gave a seminar to MFE graduate students and professors as well as professionals from local companies. His presentation was on Micro-machining of Brittle Materials. After seminar, Professor Matsumura had dinner with Professor Rong and Dr. Subbu from Saint Gobain. They gad a good discussion. Professor Yong Huang from Clemson University, SC planned to visit us and give a seminar. Due to the weather condition, the trip was cancelled.

 

Saint Gobain MQP presentation

Dec. 14, 2005, Wednesday

Three groups of WPI senior students are doing MQP with Saint Gobain. They did term presentations in HL 102. The three projects are on Grinding Chip Recycling Technique, Function and Cost Issues of Grinding Machines vs Machining Machines, and Study on Coolant nozle development. Professor Rong and Professor Moon are the co-advisors. Dr. Subbu from Saint Gobain gave many constructive comments and suggestions.

Thanksgiving Party

The traditional Thanksgiving party was held at Professor Rong's house. Besides the current students and scholars in CAM-Lab, several former CAM-Lab members came back with their families, as well as several undergraduate students from MIT, Harvard, and other school, they are Professor Rong's family-f'friends. About 30 people enjoyed Turkey and other food, as well as other activities and a lot of talking.

 

Prof. Pei’s seminar & SME Award dinner

Professor Zhijian Pei gave a seminar to Manufacturing Engineering graduate students and professors, on Grinding Technology in Semi-conductor Industry.

SME Worcester Chapter and WPI Students Chapter held an award dinner to award excellent Manufacturing Engineering students at WPI. John Lake, Justin Richard, and Sbrina Wong were the winners. Dr. K. (Subbu) Subramanian from Saint Gobain presented a keynote speech on The World is Flat – Not yet!
 

Lean manufacturing implementation at Gillette & Middleton Aerospace

November 15, 2005, Tuesday

Brian McHugh from Gillette gave a presentation on Lean Manufacturing Implementation at Gillette to MFE 530 class. He was in the class last year and started the Lean Manufacturing work at Gillette at that time. Another group of MQP students, Ice, Matt, and Zan presented their work of Lean Manufacturing for Middleton Aerospace Company. Both works have been well recognized in the companies.

Professor Xiangpei Hu from Dalian University of Science and Technology visited WPI and had meetings with Professor Amy Zeng at Management Department and Professor Rong. He gave a presentation to CAM-Lab on his research on Supplier-chain Management Techniques and Systems

CHTE meeting

November 1-2, 2005

Professor Rong, Dr. Zhang, and Radha attended the Semi-Annual Meeting of the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) held in Chicago, IL. They reported the project progress on Development of Computerized Heat Treatment Planning System for Quenching and Tempering (CHT-q/t) and discussed the future plan with the focus group.

WPI Homecoming and MFE Open House

WPI Homecoming day. Manufacturing and Materials Engineering Program ran an open house at Washburn Building. Professor Rong and Xiaoshu, a materials graduate student, introduced Manufacturing and Materials Laboratories to the visitors, including WPI alumni and their youngsters.

 

ASM Conference at Pittsburg, PA

September 25-28, 2005

Radha and Yao participated ASM Materials Science and Technology Conference and Exhibition at Pittsburgh, PA. They presented a paper on Integrated Numerical Simulation of Process Optimization for Aluminum Alloy Solutionizing, and a poster on Applications of CHT-bf and CHT-cf.

Professor Rong visited Accellent company at Brimfield, MA. He met with Tom Berrett, VP of Operation, and Mark Denning, Director of Quality, to discuss production problems and possible WPI projects.

 
Ted Kang's Ph.D proposal
September 20, 2005
Ted Kang has successfully presented his Ph.D research proposal to the advisory committee. His research is on Internet based monitoring and control of robot operations. Professor Lucy King from Kettering University came and participated the meeting. Kettering University is the sponsor of the project and Professor King is the co-advisor. Congratulations to Ted.

Participation of WPI Insight program & Picnic

Professor Rong participates in WPI Insight Program this year to help freshman students to adjust their college life and course/major selection. There are 22 students in his group. Dan Martel is the peer advisor. A picnic was held in Higgins House for people to know each other in the program.

Hong Kong IQP planning trip

September 3-8, 2005

Professor Rong, Professor Lemone from Computer Science, and Professor Peet from IGSO visited Hong Kong to plan for IQP projects of C term, 2006. 24 students will go to Hong Kong to conduct 6 IQPs in environment and education related areas. Hong Kong Civic Exchange and Critas are the main project sponsors. Professor Lemone and Professor Rong will be the advisors.

Dr. Jinwu Kang came back from Tsinghua University and worked with our research team on the CHT-q/t project. He, Dr. Zhang and Radha visited Surface Combustion and Timken companies in Ohio. Dr. Kang gave a report presentation on Friday, August 5.

 

Prof. Rong back at Tokyo Denki University

July 11 – August 1, 2005

Professor Rong spent another three weeks at Tokyo Denki University. He also visited different campuses of University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology.
 

MQP in China

May 28 – July 10, 2005

Professor Rong and four WPI senior students went to Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) at Wuhan, China for Major Qualifying Projects. More details can be seen at, MQP in China. During this time, Professor Rong visited Tsinghua University, HUST, Shanghai University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Saint Gobain Shanghai Operation, Shanghai Heavy Duty Machinery Factory, Zhejiang University, Tianjin Modular Fixture Company, Beijing Institute of Science and Technology, Harbin University of Science and Technology, and Dalian University of Science and Technology. He gave several seminars on Engineering Education at WPI and USA, Digital Manufacturing, Numerical Simulation of Heat Treatment Processes, Computer-aided Tolerance Analysis, Computer-aided Fixture Design. Professor Rong also met many his classmates and friends.

CHTE Meeting

May 24-26, 2005

The Semi-Annual Meeting of the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) was held at WPI. Professor Rong, Dr. Zhang, Radha, and Amarjit reported their project on Development of Computerized Heat Treatment Planning System for Quenching and Tempering (CHT-q/t). During the meeting time, Professors Xiong, Huang, and Xu from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, visited CAM-Lab.

 

Prof. Rong at Tokyo Denki University

April 30 – May 20, 2005

Professor Rong worked at Tokyo Denki University, Tokyo, Japan, as a visiting professor. He visited Professor Takashi Matsumura’s research laboratory and studied on Micro-Machining of Glass Materials for Biochips. During this time, Professor Rong visited Keio University and particularly Professor Tojiro Aoyama’s laboratory for research on ER fluid applications. Professor Rong also visited The Institute of Physics and Chemical Research (RIKEN) at University of Tokyo. On May 17, Professor Rong participated the annual meeting of SME Tokyo Brach on machining and grinding technologies and visited the new facility of Mori Seiki Machine Tool Company at Chiba.

WPI Project Presentation Day

On Tuesday, April 19, 2005, WPI had its annual project presentation day. 41 ME senior projects (MQP) were demonstrated. Among 6 Manufacturing Engineering MQPs, 2 were selected by four judges (3 from industry) to participate the second run competition. They received Honorable Mention awards.

Professor Rong Attended The 9th CIRP International SEminar on Computer-aided Tolerancing, at Tempe, AZ on April 10-12. He presented two papers on Monte Carlo Simulation based Tolerance ANalysis for Production Planning and Tolerance Assignment using Genetic Algorithm.

HUST visitors and MFE/MTE seminar
March 15-17, 2005

Professor Xinyu Shao and Professor Bin Li from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, China, visited WPI in March 16 and 17, 2005, after participating the Mechanical Engineering Education Conference at San Diego, CA. The conference next year will be held in Beijing, China and HUST is one of the hosting organizations. They met with Provost Simpson and Associate Provost Durgin as well as visited our CAM-Lab.

Professor Shao Gave a seminar which was cosponsored by Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering programs. The topic of the seminar was Mechanical Engineering Education and research at HUST.

HUST and WPI have signed collaboration agreements last November. Besides collaborative research and joint graduate degree programs, five WPI students will go to HUST in the coming summer for their MQP in China. Next year a group of HUST students will come to WPI for their senior projects.

Professor Cuilian Zhao from Shanghai University joined us on Sunday, March 13, 2005. She will work at CAM-Lab for about three months. Professor Zhao's research area is in CAD/CAM applications. She has led a research group and conducted several projects for different companies in China. Currently she is working towards her Ph.D degree. Hopefully her research experience will benefit us, particularly in the area of CAD/CAM application program development, and also her working experience with us is helpful in the development of her professor career.

Victor's coming back

Victor made a week-long short trip back WPI to continue his Ph.D research on Lean Manufacturing Implementation in Ecuador. He had meetings with Professor Arthur Gerstenfeld and Professor Rong . Victor reported his progress of his dissertation and discussed the plan for next step.

Yihong (David) Yang is leaving !

Yihong (David) Yang is leaving us for a Research Engineer position at Caterpillar Research Center, Peoria, IL. He will join the research team there for the research and development on production planning with UGS Team Center. David will continue his dissertation at WPI and hopefully finish it soon.
 
Dr. Kang comes back again

Dr. Jinwu Kang came back WPI from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China to WPI again, on Tuesday, January 25, 2005. This time he will work with us for about one and half months. His wife was with his for the first time to visit USA. Dr. Kang has been promoted to Associate Professor at Tsinghua University recently. Congratulations to him.

Alfred defended MS thesis

Alfred Avanessian successfully defended his MS thesis on An Analysis of the Effect of 3D Groove Insert Design on Chip Breaking Chart, on Friday, January 14, 2005. Congratulations to him.
 
MI visit
January 9-11, 2005
Dr. Rong participated the DOE project focus group meeting at Wixon, MI on January 11, 2005. Before the meeting, on Janurary 10, he visited ESI at Bloomfield, MI and Ford at Dearborn, MI. Dr. Rong also met with former CAM-Lab. members, Jian Zhu, Weidong Ma, and Xingsen (Cory) Li.
