Welcome to Prospective Students
The world is now "flat," global, competitive and connected. Knowledge is communal, skills are commodities, and increasingly engineering challenges are social rather than technical. As the World has changed in the past, so has engineering education, and it clear that major changes are imminent. At WPI we have a long tradition of being ahead of the curve. WPI introduced an outcomes based, project heavy curriculum over three decades ago and this approach has now been widely embrace by other engineering schools. We established a global program before most schools thought such as experience was important and we have often been on the forefront in introducing new engineering programs.
To be successful in the modern World an engineer must not only be proficient in the fundamentals of engineering science. He or she must also understand the social and economic context of engineering projects, be able to communicate with colleagues from anywhere, as well as the general public, and must be able to quickly learn new skills and facts. At WPI we pride ourselves in not only providing our students with unmatched preparation in engineering fundamentals but also helping students develop the non-technical professional skills necessary for success. We do, in particular, encourage our students to take advantage of the many opportunities available at WPI to do projects abroad. In addition to the Junior Projects available through the Global Perspective Program, the ME Department offers several opportunities for off-campus Senior Projects, including in China.
Although many of my colleagues are World renowned for their scholarly work, all of them are dedicated to providing the best education and experience for our students. You will find them exceptionally approachable.
